Samuel enlisted in Company G, 29th, VA, Infantry at the old Court House in Russell Co, and served about three years. He saw service at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, in Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia. He was in several battles around Richmond-most of the time under Stonewall Jackson and General Longstreet. On April 1, 1865, he was captured at the Battle of Five Forks along with a large number of his comrades and was sent to a war prison in New York Harbor. He was a farmer and school teacher.
