THOMAS KENNEDY VERONA HAPPENINGS
HIGGINSVILLE Dec. 23 -- Another old pioneer has gone. Today Thomas Kennedy, who died last Thursday night, was buried. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, Dec. 22, 1815, and came to America in 1846. He lived four years in Bridgeport, Conn., when he came to Verona township and had since resided here, first working for Solomon Rathbun in Rathbunville, near Verona Mills, and later moving onto the Irish Ridge. In August, 1854, he was married to Eliza Gleason by Father Beecham in Rome. She died 35 year ago, leaving him with seven children, the youngest as infant and the oldest about 13 years old. At this time he had bought a farm on what is known as lot no 11, not one acre of it cleared, but all stumps and timber. Never daunted at hard luck, he struggled on, raised his family of small children, cleared and ditched his farm and erected a fine set of farm buildings and leaves today one of the best farms in the town of Verona. Of his children there survive his, Mrs. Joseph Burbeck, of this place, Mrs. Michael Riley, Verona Station, Mrs. John Tyrrell, New York City, Thomas of Oneida and Michael and Francis of this place. One daughter, Mary, died about 17 years ago. He also leaves one brother Patrick of Indianapolis, Ind. Politically he was a Democrat. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Father Mathew Temperance Society, having taken the pledge from Father Mathew himself 63 years ago, before he came to America.
