Fred H. Walker passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his winter home in Lake Worth, Florida on Monday morning, January 19, 1970.
Memorial services were held for his at the Lake Worth Funeral home on Tuesday evening, January 20th. His body was flown back to Minneapolis and brought to Sauk Centre for burial. Mrs Russel Walker of Rutherford College, N.C. accompanied Mrs. Walker from West Palm Beach, Florida.
Fred Walker was born in Crab Orchard, Nebraska on May 4, 1896 to Henry and Lillie Walker. In 1912 he moved with his parents and two brothers to the Sauk Centre community. Sauk Centre became his home town until the time of his death. He was married to Lila Neal (deceased), of Sauk Centre in 1917. They were the parents of Russel (deceased), Raymond, Vivian (Mrs. Norman Bohne), Henry J. Clifford L. and Charlie.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lila, two children, Russell and Shirley, and two grand-daughters as well as two brothers, Ray and George.
In 1954 he was married to Leona Kettlewell of Sauk Centre. Surviving are his wife, Leona (formerly Mrs. R. B. Kettlewell), sons, Ray, Henry, Cliff, and Charlie; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs Stella Walker of Rutherford College, N.C.; three step children, Mrs James (Margaret) Hill of Little Falls, Minn,; Mrs. R. D. Quelland of Dallas Texas and Jack Kettlewell of Denver, Colorado. There are 21 grandchildren and an aunt, Mrs. Amelia Cummings of Crab Orchard, Nebraska.
Fred Walker was a farmer in this community until 1919 when he moved to enter business. He was associated withe the Main Street Chevrolet Co. and owner of the Chevrolet Main Street Garage for nearly 40 years. He became an active member of this community including his role as a member of the Fire department for 25 years, serving as chief part of this time.
Mr. Walker was elected to serve on the City Council and as Mayor. He was very active in promoting and obtaining St. Michael's Hospital for Sauk Centre. The award for distinguished service to his community was presented to his in 1952.
He and his wife Leona, were instrumental in organizing the Senior Citizen's organization of Sauk Centre, and he still held a genuine interest in this group. At the time of his death, he was a devoted and interested member of the First United Church of Sauk Centre, as well as an associate member of Lake Osborne Presbyterian church of Lake Worth, Florida.
To his host of friends, he was simple the home town boy, the self-made man, who was so honest and reliable and trustworthy, extremely devoted to his family, and loyal to his friends.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock at the First United Church of Sauk Centre with internment in the Greenwood cemetery. The Rev Arden Johnson officiated. Mrs. Henry Gritzmacher was organist and Lora Beth Harding was the soloist.
Active pallbearers were Lyle Sykes, Jim Benson, Dr. David Vandesteeg, Chris Miller, Louis Lovik, and Ed Borgmann. Honorary pallbearers were Art Erickson, Harry Knapp, Red Pierson, William Otto, Louis Butler, and Louis Huber.
Children and relatives from out of town attending the funeral services were Mrs. Stella Walker of Rutherford College, N.C., Mr. and Mrs James Hill of Little Falls, Minn,; Mrs. R. D. Quelland and Kay of Dallas Texas, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Kettlewell of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. George Walker, a nephew Charles and niece, Mrs. Alice Ladwig, Bryant, S.D., his niece Mrs. Gene Soderlund, her husband and three children from St. Paul, a niece Mrs. Paul Mitchell of Rochester, Minn., Clarence Quelland of Brainerd, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hill and Mrs. James Beilke of Alexandria, and Mr and Mrs. Harris Linter and daughter from Westbrock, Minn.
