Laura M. Highfill. "Madilene" Highfill, 74, a cook, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital. She was 74.

Mrs. Highfill was bron April 27, 1921, in Springfield, Mo. She lived in Merced for 74 years.

An active member of Liberty Church of God, Mrs. Highfill's family says she was a true inspiration to her family and friends. She enjoyed reading her Bible and witnessing for the Lord. She was a talented cook, baker and seamstress and enjoyed cooking for her family.

Mrs. Highfill was preceded in death by her husband, Dexter Highfill, in 1973 and her son, James Brown, in 1977.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Buckley-Redding of Mariposa; two sisters, Jewel Krejci of Atwater and Mildred Toews of Merced; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Stratford Evans Merced Chapel. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be Monday at Wonton District Cemetery.

Pastor Jim Womack of Liberty Church of God will officiate.
