Cephas M. Thomas, one of Frederick county's highly respected and substantial citizens, died at his home in Walkersville Monday morning at 5 o'clock, after an illness of about a week, from liver trouble. He was 74 years of age, having been born on a farm in Buckeystown district, August 18, 1845.
He is survived by three brothers, J. Franklin Thomas, of Frederick; Samuel C. and Curtis W. Thomas, of Adamstown. His wife died two years ago. He leaves no children.
Mr. Thomas secured his education in the public schools and chose farming as his occupation. He farmed for 25 years. In 1875 Mr. Thomas purchased a large farm of 320 acres, and on this tract followed farming until 1898, in which year he retired. He removed to Walkersville, where he erected a comfortable home.
In 1904 Mr. Thomas was one of the active movers in the organization of the Walkersville Savings Bank, of which he was elected president. He served in this capacity ever since and as head of this successful institution he disposed of the duties devolving upon him with much ability.
Mr. Thomas was one of the leading citizens of the county and was widely known in business and financial circles. He was a director of the Citizens National Bank of Frederick, from the time of its organization in 1886.
Politically Mr. Thomas was a Democrat. In 1885 he was elected as County Commissioner of Frederick county, and served with credit. In 1897 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of William H. Gaither, who died while in office. He attended the Reformed church in Walkersville.
The funeral will be held Wednesday with services at the house at 1 o'clock p.m. Interment will be made in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. C. E. Cline is the funeral director.
