From "The Jackson Sun," Oct. 17, 2008: Graveside Masonic services for J.T. Gaither, 100, will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, October 17, 2008, at Highland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Mr. Gaither died Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

He was born November 12, 1907, the oldest son of the late T.D. and Minnie Grace Gaither. Mr. Gaither was approaching his 101st birthday. He was in the Sheet Metal business all his life, starting out with his father T.D. Gaither and Sons. He opened his own business in 1949 on Church St. Upon his retirement he worked for S.M. Lawrence and Co. He also taught Sheet Metal at McKellar Vocational School for several years. Mr. Gaither was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and later Englewood Baptist Church. He served his church in many capacities such as Deacon and Finance Committee. He was also a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge #332, a shriner and drummer. He was self taught in subjects pertaining to his work such as Algebra and Geometry. He was self taught in the banjo and organ. He was also a Civil War reader and collector and loved reading all books pertaining to history and his Bible. Mr. Gaither was an admirable Christian and honest person; He will be greatly missed by his daughter Patsy who was his biggest caregiver.

Mr. Gaither was preceded in death by his wife Mary Hinds Gaither whom he was married to for 72 years 3 and 1/2 months; two daughters Peggy Dismuke and Nancy Clark; a son James T. Gaither, Jr.; a grandaughter and a great-granddaughter; 1 sister; 4 brothers and 1 infant brother.

He is survived by a daughter Patsy Cole and husband John; a son Judson Gaither; a sister Mary Helen Jenkins; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and 1 special son-in-law James "Buster" Dismuke.
