Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Wednesday, January 27, 1954:
  Philip Bast, a retired farmer of Edwardsville township, died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday morning at his home on State Route 112.
  He was born Dec. 21, 1863, in this city and had attained the age of 90 years, one month and six days. He was the son of the late John and Levelia Holderader Bast. He was married to Miss Johanna Wich on Sept. 8, 1885 at St. Joseph Catholic church in St. Louis. She preceded him in death Jan. 8, 1948, as did one son, John during World War I.
  He is survived by four sons, Edward, Fred, Joseph of this city and Frank who resides at home; four daughters, Mrs. Pat (Lena) Dollard, Mrs. Charles (Victoria) Meikamp, Mrs. Charles (Louise) Agles and Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Fischer of this city; one brother, Matt of Edwardsville township, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Becker of this city; 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
  He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic church.
  Friends may call at the Straube funeral home after 7 p.m. Thursday until Saturday at 8:20 a.m. when services will be held from the funeral home and at 9 o'clock from St. Boniface Catholic with the Rev. A.J. Cepanis officiating.
  Interment will be in St. Boniface Catholic cemetery.
