A lifetime resident of Edwardsville, Joseph Bast, 72, 734 Hilda Ave., died Sunday at 11:40 p.m. in St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland after a long illness.
Mr. Bast had been a laborer in general construction work over the past 20 years in the Edwardsville area. Previously, he worked at the U.S. Radiator Co. in Edwardsville.
He was born Aug. 11, 1896, the son of the late Philip and Johanna Wich Bast in Edwardsville.
He was married to Juanita Harmon in the St. Boniface Church Parsonage on Aug. 30, 1924, by the late Father E.J. Eckhard. Mrs. Bast survives.
Besides his wife, Mr. Bast is survived by a son, Donald J. Bast, and a daughter, Mrs. Hugh (Gertrude) Snell, both of Edwardsville; three brothers, Edward M. Bast, Frank M. Bast and Fred Bast, all of Edwardsville; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Dollard of St. Louis, Mrs. Louis Agles and Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Fisher, both of Edwardsville, and three grandchildren.
One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Lesley Marks Funeral Home in Edwardsville after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday when the body will be removed to St. Boniface Catholic Church for Requiem Mass at 9:30 a.m.
The Rev. Ralph Guido of St. Boniface Church will officiate.
The Rosary will be recited at the Lesley Marks Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.
