Entrepreneur, community leader and civic activist Douglas J. Lambert Sr. passed from this earthly life into eternal life at the family homestead Tuesday, April 24, 2007, surrounded by the love of his family, but with his beloved wife, Sadie, by his side as she has been for 67 years.
Douglas J. Lambert Sr. was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Coatesville to the late Liza Jane Johnson Lambert.
His leadership ability, determination and tenacity to overcome life's obstacles became apparent at an early age. At the age of 13, along with his brothers, he was orphaned. With his grandmother, Annie Glasco, he helped raise two of his four brothers.
While attending the Coatesville area schools, he went to work to help take care of his brothers and graduated in 1938 from Coatesville High School.
After graduation, he worked for two years at Robinson's Body Shop and then for two years at Lukens Steel Co.
During the Depression in the 1930s, Douglas worked as a paperboy and ice boy. He helped build Eagle Road on the W.P.A program and worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
With a entrepreneurial spirit and a deep desire to 'own his own business,' Douglas opened Lambert's Garage and Body Shop on South First Avenue in 1942. In 1946, Douglas then operated a bus company from Coatesville to Claymont Steel Mill, until the insurance was canceled by the Interstate Commerce Commission. In 1949, he moved his business to South Strode Avenue. From 1950 to 1952, he also operated a body shop in Parkesburg. Along with the body shop, from 1968 to 1973, he operated a gas station at 2949 E. Lincoln Highway.
In 1970, with his son, Thomas, Douglas opened Lambert Chrysler-Plymouth Inc. in Coatesville. Douglas moved his South Strode Avenue body shop adjacent to the dealership. Doug Jr. also worked with his father and brother in the dealership for two years. After 22 years in the new and used auto business, Douglas and Thomas sold the oldest African American-owned Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in the state of Pennsylvania.
Although Douglas semi-retired, he never fully retired, cutting his hours back to just 30 hours a week.
In Douglas' early and active years he had numerous civic and professional community affiliations, including Lily of the Valley Lodge #69, IBPOE of World, the NAACP, Atkinson Hospital Board of Managers, many years on the Valley Township Planning Committee, a two-year term on the Coatesville Area School Board 'he was appointed to by Albert Eastburn,' 12 years on the Coatesville Hospital Board of Managers 'appointed by William Battinger,' Coatesville Vo-Tech School Craft Committee, president of Chester County New Car Dealers Association, YMCA Board of Directors, national treasurer of Chrysler Corp.'s Minority Dealers Association, Coatesville Rotary Club, where he was one of the First African-American Coatesville Rotarians, the first African American Coatesville Country Club member, and served on the Chester County Airport Authority Board Member.
Douglas has been the recipient of honors and awards by numerous organizations.
As a young boy, Douglas was baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Passtown. He continued to be a faithful supporter of the Education Committee. He believed in education and in helping others.
He was a humble man. He was a man who did not complain and always remembered from where God had brought him. A glance at Douglas J. Lambert Sr.'s life is a testimony that anyone with God in their life and determination to succeed, can make it.
Douglas leaves to mourn his wife of almost 67 years, Sadie I. Lambert; his children, Joyce, wife of Richard Taylor of Matawan, N.J., Charlotte Jane Adams of Henderson, Nev., Douglas J. Lambert Jr. of Coatesville, Thomas D. Lambert Sr., husband of Lillian L. DeBaptiste Lambert of West Chester, and Louise L. Smith, wife of James Smith of Coatesville; three brothers, Wilson T. Lambert Sr., William A. Lambert Sr. and Joseph Mason, all of Coatesville; 13 grandchildren, including Robert Jackson, who helped in his care for the past year; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Amos S. Mason, and a grandson, Victor C. Lambert.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Passtown, 117 Barber Ave., Coatesville, Monday, April 30, 11 a.m., with all viewing from 8 to 11 a.m.
The interment will be in the New Evergreen Cemetery, Coatesville.
Contributions in his memory can be made to the Education Committee of the First Baptist Church of Passtown, at the address above, where a scholarship will be established in his memory.
