Robert P. Tondee is the son of Charles R. Tondee and Cenia Gaddy Tondee. He was the only child of Cenia Gaddy Tondee to survive until adulthood.

Robert enlisted in Schley County - Company B, 17th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. He was elected Jr 2nd Lieutenant on the August 14, 1861. He was elected 1st Lieutenant on December 1, 1861. He was wounded at the 2nd Manssas Battle in Virginia on August 30, 1862. He was elected Captain in May, 1863. He was with his unit at the surrender at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865. He was in the same unit as his brother William Henry Harrison Tondee.

Robert Tondee moved to Americus, Georgia after the war and was a store clerk in a dry goods store. He never married and had no children.
