On the evening of September 5, 1885, Stonewall Jackson Tondee, a clerk at a warehouse was doing someone work in the back of the warehouse, when a shot was fired from the behind the warehouse through a windown and killed the young Mr. Tondee. And arrest was made later that evening of Charles Blackman. He was then tried and convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Newspaper accounts recorded that he appealed to the upper courts and to the Governor to overturn his conviction. Newspaper accounts also record unrest among the white citizenry and threats of vigilantly actions were of much concern by the local police. Charles Blackman was scheduled to be hung on August 15, 1886 for the murder of Stonewall Jackson Tondee.
