Joseph Simon, 75, 578 W. Wabasha St., a retired assistant postmaster, died Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Community Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

He was born Dec. 1, 1890, in Oak Ridge, Minn., to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Simon. He had lived his lifetime in this area. He married Elvira Morcomb August 12, 1922 in St. Paul.

Prior to World War I, he saw service with the Indian Bureau of the Department of the Interior in South Dakota and Washington, D.C. He entered the Army July 24, 1918 and served in France with the Allied Expeditionary Force as a battalion sergeant major from September 1918 until January 1919.

After the war he worked for the Standard Oil Co. He then entered the postal service here in 1926. He served as assistant postmaster here from 1941 until he retired in 1955.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and of the United Commercial Travelers, serving as senior counselor and also on the advisory committee.

Survivors are: His wife; two sons, Curtis G., Richfield, Minn., and Joseph J., Vienna, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Rose Johnson, Winona, and Mrs. Rita Fritz, Wilmington, Dela., and 14 grandchildren. Five sisters and five brothers have died.

Funeral services will be Wednesday evening at 7:30 at the Cathedral, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Harold J. Dittman officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

There will be no visitation at Burke's Funeral Home. The casket will be open after the funeral service at the Cathedral Wednesday evening. The Winona Daily News, 23 Aug 1966


Graveside funeral rites for Joseph Simon, 75, 378 W. Wabasha St., who died Monday, were held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, at 1 p.m. today.

Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Harold J. Dittman officiated.

Pallbearers were Cecil Morcomb, C. Lewis Woood, B. J. Snyder, August Rick, Frank Boland and John Schlaefer. The Daily Record, Thursday, August 25, 1966.
