TOMAH - Leon W. Buttchen, age 92, formerly of Cross Plains/Black Earth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at the Tomah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Feb. 7, 1924, to Herman and Catherine (Hoven) Buttchen in Cross Plains, Wis. Leon enjoyed spending his time working in his garden, fishing, woodworking and enjoyed dancing the night away.


Leon was formerly married to Marie (Haag) Buttchen. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Dorothy (Chambers) Buttchen; by his son, Jeffrey W. Buttchen; his step-daughter, Betty (Tom) Wroblewski; a granddaughter, Jennifer Buttchen; a brother, Elmer (Margaret) Buttchen; and sisters, Armella (Herman) Miller and Veronica (Bill) Miller.

Leon is survived by nine children, Roger (Terri) Buttchen, Patricia (John) Kaeser, Steve (Sue) Buttchen, Mark Buttchen, Julie Buttchen, Brian (Chelle) Buttchen, Brenda (Mark) Larson, Scott Buttchen, and Angela (Dave) Chappell; a daughter-in-law, Heidi Buttchen; 31 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three step-children.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the SONNENBURG FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah, WI 54660. Pastor Deb Burkhalter will officiate. Burial will be at the Wood Cemetery, Town of Byron. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Tuesday until the time of the service.
