6th Mills Traffic Death Claims Hastings Farmer
The tragic death Sunday morning of Weeren Gilbert Bowen, 58-year-old Hastings farmer, brought to six the number of traffic fatalities in Mills county this year, according to Sheriff Don Rhoden.
Bowen's death occurred when his car and Burlington passenger train No 6 met at 10:35 three miles west of Emerson. The accident took place at a county road crossing.
The eastbound train scattered the car's wreckage some 100 feet.
Bowen died of an internal Hemorrhage and multiple fractures.
Weeren Gilbert Bowen was born Mary 29, 1898 to Walter and Emma Bowen of Douglas county, Kansas. Here Weeren attended the rural school founded in 1870 by his grandfather, Zodoc Bowen and first taught by his grandmother, Minerva Bowen. Later Weeren's daughter Lorraine was one of the last teachers of this pioneer school.
In 1910 the Bowen family moved from Douglas county, Kan, to the home site near Hastings, Ia. Here Weeren finished his education at North Grove school and entered farming with his father and brothers.
On March 2, 1921 he was united in marriage to Neva Parker. Together they started farming and taking part in community activities. Though quiet and unassuming Weeren was intensely interested in the welfare of all youth. He was president of the school board for 21 years and active in promoting 4-H work.
A generous and thoughtful neighbor and family man. Weeren will be missed by all knowing him. He leaves the example of truly living for his fellow man.
He passed away July 29, 1956 at the age of 58 years and four months.
Those left of cherish his memory are his wife Neva, Son, Jimmy, son Jack and family, Virginia and Douglas, daughter Lorraine and family, Clarence, Janie and Jerry Boos. There also remain three brothers, Russell, Ted and Mark; three sisters, Inez, Veryl and Alma. A brother Gregg (Grigg) and a son preceded him in death.
Many other relatives and friends join the family in their sorrow. Weeren will rest among friends and family in North Grove cemetery.
