obituary- Mills County Tribune 1-3-1905
Alex Bowen Dead
Lived Near Hastings- Gave away his Land to Relatives
Alex Bowen, an eccentric old bachelor and well know farmer, died last Friday night at 9 o'clock at his home south of Hastings, aged about 70 years.
A short time before he had suffered a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was held from his home at 11 o'clock Sunday morning and burial was made in the South Grove cemetery near by.
He had lived in Mills county for about a half century and was therefore among the oldest settlers.
He had been a extensive land owner in Mills county and also had considerable land in Nebraska.
Several years ago he caused to be divided among a number of his relatives all of his land. This included at 1000 acres of Mills county soil along the Nishna in the vicinity of Hastings.
For himself he only retained 200 acres. He had no brother or sisters living in Mills County. One brother lived in Nebraska.
One object in his thus dividing the land before his death was, doubtless, to escape the Iowa law taxing estates five per cent where no direct heirs are left. He evidently preferred relatives to have his property in place of the state.
Mr Bowen lived very plain. He had the reputation of honesty and fair dealing among his neighbors. He helped organized the Botna Valley State Bank at Hastings and was a director of it till a few years ago.

Further notes: The newspaper has numerous articles about the division of Alex's property. One family historian states that Alex may have been married and divorced, but this reseacher has found no evidence of that being true
