Lorene Vermillion, 86, of Stamford, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2009 after a battle with cancer.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jack Riddlehover and Rev. James McKinnon officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home.

Lorene was born on October 1, 1922, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, to the late Southern Baptist Missionaries, Dr. Everett George and Callie (Perrin) Wilcox. She graduated from Brownwood High School and then obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Howard Payne College in 1943. That same year she married James H. Vermillion on May 28 in Brownwood.

While attending Howard Payne College she was a member of the Life Service Band, a missionary organization. Lorene later attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth where James was a ministerial student. Together they served in ministry where she was a faithful pastor's wife. She served as church pianist and organist in many of the churches where James pastored.

Lorene was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Stamford where she served as the pianist. Her greatest joys were serving her family and worshiping the Lord with music.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Chaplain Charles Myers.

Mrs. Vermillion is survived by her husband of 65 years, James H. Vermillion of Stamford; daughter, Dorothy Anderson and husband Jerry of Stamford; two sons, Charles Everett Vermillion and wife Elaine of Millersview, and Ernest Lee Vermillion and wife Dorothy Ann of Avoca; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Jo Dickson and husband Charles of Austin, and Trudie Jackson and husband Richard of San Angelo; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials in honor of Mrs. Vermillion may be made to the Hendrick Hospice Care, 1900 Pine St., Abilene, Texas 79601 or a charity of your choice.
