Myrtle Alice Bump was the daughter of Fayette Durlin Bump and Ida Maude Alverson. When she was eleven years old her father, Fayette, passed away. In 1918 her mother remarried to a good man, Lynn Kelly who was always supportive of her. On September 14, 1923 she married Charles Henry Sherwood. Eight children were born to this union. Three of her children preceeded her in death; Marion Maude, Charles Henry Jr., and Robert Joseph were all mourned upon their passing. Myrtle was just 32 years old and six months pregnant with the ninth child at the time of her death. She had been treated for more than six years for a disorder of the centeral nervos system. She developed pneumonia on January 4th, 1935 and was hosipalitized from then until her death on Feb 28, 1935; she had been under the care of Dr. James Tobin at St Joseph's hospital. When her death occured her five remaining children ranged in ages from 1 to 8 years old. The two youngest children, John Wesley age 1, and Charlotte May, age 2 went to stay at their Grandma and Grandpa Kelly's. The oldest daughter, Alice M. age 8 remained with her father for two more years and then was removed and went to stay with foster care. She was finally placed at Park Ridge School for Girls. The remaining two boys, Ralph Lynn age 6 and Walter Daniel, age 4, remained with their father for several more years. Eventually all five children ended up in foster care and became wards of the state of Illinois. The family never came back together again. The struggles that each child endured was enourmous. The father was never able to provide a real home for his five children after the loss of their mother. She was preceded in death by her children, Marion Maude, Charles Henry Jr., and Robert Joseph.
