Joseph Grass, Ex-Treasurer Of Town of Lake, Dead at 90
Joseph Grass, 90, former supervisor and treasurer of the Town of Lake, intimate friend of the late Mayor David Rose, and one of the developers of St. Francis Heights, collapsed and died of a heart attack Thursday in his home, 3446 N. Bartlett Ave.
A fire department rescue squad worked unsuccessfully 10 minutes. Physicians at County Emergency Hospital pronounced him dead when a police ambulance brought him there.
IN TAVERN BUSINESS
Born in Spring Prairie, Wis., Mr. Grass came to Milwaukee County when young. He was on a farm in the Town of Lake five years, and then entered the tavern business in South Milwaukee. He was a tavern keeper in that city 44 years previous to retirement many years ago.
At one time he also was in the excavating business and excavated for the foundation of the Cudahy Bros. Packing Co. plant.
SURVIVED BY WIFE
Su rviving are his wife, Susan, 83; four sons, Leonard, clerk of Circuit Court; Joseph Jr., in the real estate business; Frank and Charles; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Manka and Mrs. Alice Brahn; 30 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Frank.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church in St. Francis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joseph Grass, 90, former supervisor and treasurer of the town of Lake, died Thursday at his home, 3444 N. Bartlett ave.
Born in Spring Prairie, Wis., Mr. Grass came to Milwaukee when 16 and started his career as a packing house helper. An early promoter of St. Francis Heights subdivision, he became a close friend of the late Mayor David Rose. He was a tavern keeper for 45 years and for a time also operated an excavating business. For many years he was chief ranger of Sacred Heart Court No. 973 of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors are his wife, Susan; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Manka and Mrs. Alice Brahm; four sons, Joseph Jr., Leonard, Frank and Charles, and a brother, Frank. He had 30 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart church, 3627 S. Kinnickinnic av. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The body will be at the George L. Weland funeral home, 3412 W. Center st., from 6 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Monday.
