Francis Marion Tanner, 100, passed away Feb. 13 at Uintah Care Center in Vernal. He was known as Frank Tanner throughout his life.

Frank was born March 16, 1908, in Lebanon, Ariz., to George Albert and Emma Viola Spencer Tanner. Frank was the seventh of 12 children, two of whom died as infants. When he was 4 years old his mother was very sick, and the doctor recommended that she be moved from Arizona to Utah for her health. So at the age of 5, he walked behind a wagon and team from Arizona to Utah.

The family started their trek with their possessions in two covered wagons, but one of the horses got injured, so they had to move their possessions into one wagon. The possessions that wouldn't fit, including his mother's rocking chair, were set on fire so others wouldn't get them. Frank remembered eating quail during the trek. After arriving in Utah the family settled in the Uintah Basin.

Frank was 14 when his next oldest sister, Thelma, 16, was riding a horse and was struck by lightning. She died at their home a few days later.

Frank attended school in Ioka. The family eventually settled on farmland near the Duchesne River, three miles west of Myton. Frank married Harriet Pearl Mecham on Dec. 30, 1933, in Vernal. They made their home on the property owned by Frank's parents, which Frank later purchased from his parents.

Frank and Pearl had four children, Arva Marie (born in 1934), Norman Dee (1935), Cleora Jane (1946) and Franklin Deloy (1954).

Frank was a successful rancher and built Pearl's dream home, which he felt was his greatest accomplishment. They moved into a new home in 1949, and Frank and Pearl lived there and ran the ranch until Frank was in his 60s. In 1974, Frank sold the ranch, and they moved to Myton, where he bought, remodeled and sold many homes, working well into his late 80s.

Frank was a devoted son, husband and father. Pearl got rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s, and Frank took care of her until she passed away on Aug. 31, 1983. He also helped care for his parents until their passing and for his older brother, Albert. He married Arloia Cox Reid in July 1984. They later divorced.

In 1996 he moved to Vernal to be near his daughter, Arva, and her husband, Boyd Redden, both of whom helped care for him in his later years. He lived independently in his Vernal home until he was 99 and enjoyed doing yard work and gardening from his wheelchair.

He is survived by three of his children, Norman Dee (Wilda) Tanner, Mapleton, Utah, Cleora Jane O'Neil, Spanaway, Wash., and Franklin Deloy (Anna Mae) Tanner, Lincoln, Neb; son-in-law, Boyd J. Redden, Vernal; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Arva Marie; his wife; parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 21 in the Myton Ward LDS Chapel
