Emily (Chavis) White, died peacefully on Monday, January 9, 2009, with her husband in attendance. Emily was born in Pace, Florida, one of ten children of Thomas David Chavis and Bertha Mae Nowing. There are three surviving siblings; Nellie Smith, and Clifford Chavis both of Pensacola, Florida, and Betty Arnold of Jacksonville, Florida. She was pre-deceased by brothers, J.D., Luther, Virgus, Lavoghn, and Alvin, and sister Dorothy Chavis.
Emily married Henry Murphree White in 1942, and during his 30 years of Military Service with the U.S. Navy, they had the opportunity to live in several cities around the country as well as in Hawaii and Guam. While in Hawaii, Emily and Henry helped to build an Episcopal Church to house a growing congregation. In her early years of marriage Emily worked at NAS Pensacola, Communications Center and was active as a Red Cross Volunteer in the various locations where they were stationed. Emily and Henry, long time members of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida, have actively participated in several groups and ministries of the church, most notably as members of the choir. Until her death Emily was also an active and faithful member of Episcopal Church Women.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Murphree White of Gulf Breeze, Florida; two sons, Richard Murphree (Sandra) White, Newport Bluffs, California, and Bruce Alan White, La Mesa, California; eight grandchildren; Haley, Heather, Austin, Michelle, Reanna, Angela, Deborah and Darren, and three great-grandchildren, all of California. Deceased daughters Shirley (White) Edge, and daughter Kathleen Phyllis White, who died in infancy, complete their immediate family.
Friends of Emily and Henry are invited to participate at a service in celebration of Emily's life, which will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009, at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 1 St. Francis Drive, Gulf Breeze, Florida. Interment, at a later date, will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola.
In lieu of flowers Henry and his family suggest donations, in memory of Emily, be made to St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 1 St. Francis Drive, Gulf Breeze, Florida, 32561, or to the charity of your choice.
