She cherished living on the water at Oriole Beach in Gulf Breeze, Florida for over sixty years until hurricane Ivan destroyed her home in 2006. Nellie loved her family. At the age of sixteen she lost her mother and as the oldest girl she became the mother of nine brothers and sisters. Preceding her in death were her husband, George Henry Smith; her son, Thomas Stanley Smith; her daughter, Nancy Jane Brooks; her father, Thomas David Chavis; her mother, Bertha Nowling Chavis; brothers, J.C. Chavis, Luther D. Chavis, Vergus Chavis, Levoghn Chavis and Alvin D. Chavis; and sisters, Dorothy Mae Mitchell and Emily Ruth White.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Judith Smith Morris of Augusta, Georgia; her companion of thirty-five years, Martin V. Mitchell of Pensacola, Florida; her sister, Betty Jean Arnold of Gibson, Georgia; her brother, Clifford L. Chavis of Pensacola, Florida; eight grandchildren, John Douglas Ivey and Lisa Ivey Gates of Pensacola, Byron Scott Brooks of Louisiana; William Curtis "Curt" Morris, Jr. and William Brian Morris of Birmingham, Alabama, Shanna J'nai Smith, Lac'e Simone Smith and Falon N'cole Smith of Pensacola; and five great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Celebration will be held on her birthday at Portofino on Pensacola Beach where her birthdays have been celebrated for the past twenty years.
If so desired memorials may be made to the Jud Hickey Center, 1901 Central Avenue, Augusta, Georgia 30904 or to St. Joseph Foundation, Trinity Hospice Memorial, 2803 Wrightsboro Road, Suite 38, Augusta, Georgia 30909.
