Newton was distinguished in appearance, articulate and had such beautiful penmanship that he was called upon to sign thousands of high school diplomas and certificates.

"GOLDEN WEDDING OF PROMINENT VAN WERT COUNTY COUPLE NICELY CELEBRATED
"The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Putman of Ohio City, was nicely celebrated Wednesday at a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fremont Putman, of West Maple Avenue. In the course of the celebration, a re-marriage ceremony was conducted by Rev. W.E. Bovey, of the First United Brethren Church, assisted by Rev. C.D.N. Moore, of Lima, Evangelist. The home was tastefully decorated in a color scheme of gold and white."
Obituary from "Lima New," Lima, OH, 1 November, 1939:
"J.N. Putman, 82, died Tuesday of complications at his home in Ohio City. He had been ill for more than a year.
"He was born March 30, 1857 and was a son of the late Peter and Sarah Neiferd Putman, pioneer residents of Liberty Township. He had been caretaker at Ohio City Woodlawn Cemetery. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge."
Children of Jasper Newton and Emma Putman were: Fremont, Grace Marie (Lindemoot), Lucy Lee, Ira Victor and Sherman Earl.
