CHARLES STEWART, BUSINESSMAN AND VETERN PASSES AWAY

BELONGED TO THE G.A.R. AND HAD BEEN ENGAGED IN THE WHOLESALE GROCERY AND REAL ESTATE BUSINESS FOR MANY YEARS

Charles Stewart, a prominent member of the G.A.R. of this city and a well known real estate dealer died yesterday at his home 1213 Forest Avenue after a ungering illness. He was compelled to give up work a year ago and since that time had been confined to his home the greater part of the time. Death was due to uremic posioning, resulted from exposure while in the the Army.
Mr. Stewart came to Kansas City twenty years ago from St. Joseph, Mo. where he had been a whole sale grocer and formed a partnership with WA Wilson in the wholesale tea business. He remained with Mr. Wilson only a short time when he engaged in the grain business. He acquired considerable real estate and finally gave up the grain business to give his entire attention to his real estate. During the boom he accumulated a fortune, but lost the greater amount when the collapse came. He at one time owned a block on Cherry betweem Thirteenth and Fourteenth Streets, several pieces of property on Grand Ave. and several acre tracts in the southern part of the city.
Mr. Stewart was born in Georgetown, O. July 27, 1840. When 2 years old his parent removed to Danville Mo. where he received a common school education. He was attending Central College at Fayette when the war broke out. He enlisted under Gen. Guitar and was made Cpt. in the commissary dept. He served four years and was breveted major when mustered out, for gallantry. He was in the grocery business in Florence, and Macon Mo. prior to going into the whole sale business at St. Joseph. Since his residence in this city he had been a prominent memeber of the Farragut-Thomas GAR post and of the Loyal Legion of Missouri
A widow and two children survive him. The funeral services will be held from the family home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Mr CM Hawkins will officate. The GAR post will have charge of the services, and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery tomorrow morning"
