Died of Cholera. Grew up around Georgetown Ohio. Was Tax Collector for the Missouri 4th District with his son D. A. Stewart. Lived at 701 Georgia Street.

Was a close intimate family friend with General U.S. and Mrs. Julia (Dent) Grant. The Grants visited their house in Louisiana, Missouri.

"Advise to Col. Dick to take the testimony of Alex Lyter concerning the time Capt. Bill Meyers, the daughter of John Matthews and Pleasant Davis, shot by Maj. Johnson in Pike County, rode to Lyter's 5/22/1863" taken from the Union Provost Marshal Papers Missouri 1861-1866
