John Casterline was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, Feb. 25, 1808, and died at the home of his son, Smith Casterline, in Hartford City, Indiana, Mar. 17, 1899 at age 91 years, 20 days. He moved with his father's family to Steuben County, New York in 1824 at which place he was united in marriage to Eliza Wixsom November 23, 1831. His married life was a happy one of 54 years. His wife passed away July 20, 1885. He was next to the youngest and the last son of his father's family of 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. In 1836 he moved to Fayette County, Indiana and from there to Blackford County in 1840 where he purchased a farm 2 miles west of Hartford City where he lived until 1890 when he went to live with his son, Smith. He had been a sufferer for about 30 years and for the past 15 years of his life he was totally blind. There were born to Mr. Casterline 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls, of which 4 have preceded him in death. He and his companion from early youth were active members of the Missionary Baptist Church in which faith they have both died, his daily life consistent with his profession as a follower of the blessed Savior. He commanded the respect of all who knew him. He leaves 2 sons and 2 daughters, a number of other relatives together with a host of friends who mourn his death. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Elizabethtown Cemetery.
Their children: Albert (Nov. 19, 1832); Ira (Feb. 14, 1835); Aaron (May 13, 1838); Mary Jane (April 22, 1841); Smith (Feb. 7, 1845); Rachel (Jan. 29, 1848); Charlotta Rebecca (Nov. 9, 1851); Martha Ann (April 28, 1856).
