PVT. RUSSELL ROBERTS SUCCUMBS TO "FLU"

Eleventh Shelby County Soldier To Die In An American Training Camp

Private Russell Roberts died at 6 o'clock this morning from Spanish influenza at the Metropole barracks in Indianapolis. His death adds the twelfth name to Shelby County's list of soldiers who have died in American training camps.

Contracting the influenza about a week ago, the disease developed into pneumonia and resulted in his death this morning. He left this city Sept. 3, being detailed by the local draft board for vocational training at the Metropole barracks at Indianapolis. He was always engaged in agricultural pursuits until the time of his induction into military service, living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Roberts, four miles south of Waldron, in Noble township. He was married to Miss Gladys Wiley, of St. Paul, about ten months ago, but they did not go to housekeeping and made their home with the bridegroom's parents, as he expected his induction into the service of his country.

He was about twenty-two years old and was the youngest member of the family. Besides his parents and widow, he leaves two brothers, Vannoy Roberts and Virgil Roberts, who are married and live in Noble township; one sister, Mrs. Ora Cuskaden, likewise of Noble township; also, an uncle, Herbert L. Gregory, and a cousin, E.W. Lewis, residing in this city.

Funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as the body arrives from Indianapolis at the family home near Waldron. Stewart & Fix, undertakers.
