Sarah Jane Courtney (the oldest daughter), married Jacob Houk March 10, 1859 in Spring Lake, Scott County Minnesota. They moved to Iowa in 1860, and in 1868 crossed the plains to the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Sarah and Jacob made these moves with her family members. The others moved to the Walla Walla area of Washington in 1871, but Sarah refused to move again. William Ellsworth Houk, was born 20 days after Jacob and Sarah arrived in Linn Co., Oregon. You can read about that in HISTORY OF A PIONEER FAMILY(written by her sister Florence Courtney Melton who also made the trip to Oregon at the age of about ten. She celebrated her Eleventh birthday on the trail).

Sarah Jane Courtney was seventeen the twenty-third of November, 1858. They had a dinner and invited friends for her birthday. The guests came in sleds and drove over a stake and ridered fence in safety. When she married [Jacob Houk] the eleventh of March, 1859, the same snow was on the ground, and they still drove over the fences, and it snowed so hard the day of the wedding that some of the guests had a narrow escape from being lost.
