Sarah Jane Courtney (the oldest daughter), married Jacob Houk March 10, 1859 in Spring Lake, Scott County Minnesota. They moved to Iowa in 1860, and in 1868 crossed the plains to the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Sarah and Jacob made these moves with her family members. The others moved to the Walla Walla area of Washington in 1871, but Sarah refused to move again. William Ellsworth Houk, was born 20 days after Jacob and Sarah arrived in Linn Co., Oregon. She celebrated her Eleventh birthday on the trail).
