Jacob was the s/o Levi Courtney and wife, Mary Anne Ashbaugh. He was the oldest of six children, his siblings being, Sarah, Mary, Levi, Willam and Florence. They moved to Minnesota and from there to IA. He enlisted in Co. L Third IA. CAV. during the Civil War. A military headstone marks his grave.
After the war, his entire family moved to Pomeroy WA., but Jacob was a wanderer and stayed behind. He met and married Margaret Porter, d/o Isaac and Juliann Gustin Porter on Aug. 21, 1867 in Humeston, Wayne Co., IA. They had one child, a daughter, Mary Lillian, but this didn't stop his wandering. They finally ended up in Avoca where he is buried. May he rest in peace. He was my husband's great great grandfather.

Cause of death: Stroke.
