Alexander George Balch, 87, of New Kensington, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in Consulate Health Care, Cheswick. He was born July 10, 1921, in Penn, son of the late George and Anna Nellis Balch. He graduated from Ken-Hi in 1939 and played fast pitch softball as a teenager. He worked for Alcoa for 32 years as a quality control inspector and then worked for the New Kensington-Arnold School District for 15 years in the maintenance department. He enjoyed watching the Pirates and Steelers, pitching horseshoes, reading and fishing. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force during World War II in the Western Pacific as a radio control operator using International Morse Code. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in New Kensington. He was the past president and recording secretary for many years for the 7th Street Sportsman's Club, president and former board member of the Aluminum City Terrace Housing Association and a member of the VFW in Lower Burrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Leona Sukala. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Irene Slosarik Balch, of New Kensington; two daughters, Jacqueline (Clifford) Overly, of Lower Burrell, and Susan Nix, of Apollo; son, George J. (Sandra) Balch, of Lower Burrell; brother, Frank (Kay) Balch, of Plum; two sisters, Helen Petkus, of Puyallup, Wash., and Dorothy Ansani, of New Kensington; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOSEPH J. CARDARO FUNERAL HOME, New Kensington. The 7th Street Sportsman's Club will hold a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Prayers of transfer will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home, followed by Christian Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Father Daniel Blout officiating. Private interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.
