LEONARD ELWOOD

Leonard P. Elwood, son of Thomas and Alice Elwood, was born April 21, 1896 in Albia, Kan., and died at the Veterans hospital in Wichita July 3, 1979, at the age of 83 years, two months and 12 days. Leonard farmed most of his life, he will be remembered by many for his love of horses.

He served his country during World War I.

He was a lifetime member of the Alocute F. Dexter Post No. 101 of the American Legion, Clayt Center, and World War I Barracks of Washington.

He was united in marriage to Mamie Mooren on March 2, 1926, at Marysville and to this union one daughter, Betty, was born. Preceding him in death were his father and mother, five brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife Mamie, daughter Betty Nabors, Washington; grandsons, Jack and wife Pam of Manhattan; Geary and wife Joan of Lincoln, Kan.; granddaughter Coleen and husband Kenneth of Wesbaden, Germany; three great granddaughters and two great grandsons; one brother, Ben of Ridgefield, Wash; two sisters: Grace Justis, North Platte, Neb., and Louise Brown of Wymore, Neb.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Friday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. from Ward Funeral Home, Washington. Music was furnished by Dr. James Smart, soloist and Mrs. Norman Stewart, organist.

Casket bearers were Gerald McAtee, Darrell McAtee, James Mooren, William Rynek, LeRoy Zabokitasky, Lawrence Mooren. Interment Washington City Cemetery with military graveside service by a contingent from Fort Riley.
