Clara Gale's baptismal record states that Clara was born April 13th, 1855 in Santa Clara, California, the daughter of Joseph Gale, Catholic, and Eliza Gale , Gentile. Clara was baptized on July 30th, 1858 by Reverend Father Cipriano Rubio of Mission Santa Ines in the Canyon of Fort Tejon, California where the Gale family lived in the little community of Grapevine.
Clara Gale's father, Joseph Gale, held the honor of being a former Governor on the first triumvirate Executive Committee of the Oregon Provisional Government in 1843-1844, and Clara's mother Eliza Gale, was a daughter of Nez Perce Old Chief Joseph.
In 1848 the Gale family moved from Oregon to California and lived at Pueblo de San Jose in Santa Clara County. They next moved to the mouth of Tejon Canyon where Joseph Gale contracted services to Fort Tejon and later managed the Butterfield Stage Station at Gordon's Ferry (now Bakersfield, CA) from 1859 until the Gales moved to Walla Walla, Washington. In 1867 the Gale family settled in Eagle Valley, Oregon where Clara grew to maturity.
After the death of her father, Joseph Gale in 1881, Clara purchased the Gale's homestead in New Bridge, Oregon and continued to live there with her sister, Mary. Clara Gale was known in the community to be well educated, a virtuous refined lady who wrote a good hand and especially known for her musically ability.
On March 14, 1889 Clara gave birth to a male child who was adopted by Lee and Eliza Beam, and on September 21, 1890 Clara Gale married widower James N. Holcomb at the home of her sister, Mary Gale Tobin in New Bridge. Clara Gale Holcomb and James N. Holcomb became parents of a daughter on February 23, 1892, named Hazel but lovingly called Hallie.
Baby Hazel Holcomb died on January 21, 1894, followed by the death of Clara Gale Holcomb on January 26 1894, and Clara's sister, Mary Gale Tobin on January 29, 1894, all dying from diphtheria. They are buried in the Eagle Valley Cemetery near the grave of Clara's father. Joseph Gale.
Clara Gale Holcomb was survived by her husband, James N. Holcomb, her mother, Eliza Gale of Weston, Oregon, and her son Lester Beam, as well as her sisters Ellen Gale Page of Seattle, Washington, Lucretia Gale Simpson of Umatilla County, Oregon, step-children and many nieces and nephews.
