Susan Gale received her early education along with her siblings, Ellen, Edward and Margaret in Tuality County, Oregon at the Tualatin Academy, which in later years became known as Pacific University.
Susan Gale married David W. Darling, a gold miner in California about 1860. Susan became the mother of Eddie, born in 1861 in California. They moved to Washington Territory and Grace was born in 1864, James, about 1867, Katie, January 1868, Tom, about 1869, Carrie about 1870 and Nellie in January 1872, with only Grace, James, Katie, Carrie and Nellie surviving their mother who died in early 1875.
At the time of Susan Darling's death they lived on their homestead on Coppei Creek in Walla Walla County, Washington. It was believed that Susan Darling died of diphtheria along with several of her children.
After the death of Susan Gale Darling, the surviving children were taken by their father, David W. Darling in March of 1875 to Eagle Valley, Union County, Oregon to live with their grandparents. Joseph and Eliza Gale.
Upon the death of their grandfather, Joseph Gale in 1881, the Darling children then moved in 1882 with their grandmother and guardian, Eliza Gale to the Umatilla Indian Reservation and lived with her on her Indian land on Wild Horse Creek.
Susan Gale Darling was survived by her husband, parents, children, and sisters, Ellen Gale Page of Walla Walla Washington, Margaret Gale Cuddy of Kern County, California, and Mary Gale Tobin, Lucretia Gale Simpson, and Clara Gale Holcomb of Eagle Valley, Oregon.
