Mrs Sarah A. Green Hurd, 85, of Grover, died Tuesday in Grover of Ailments incident to old age. She had not been in good health for several months, but was able to get up and around the house until the last week.
Mrs Hurd was born in Richfield, Utah on February 13 1887 and spent her girlhood years there. She married Mark Hurd on December 6, 1883 in the old Endowment House in Salt Lake City. After her marriage, Mr and Mrs Hurd lived in Snowville, Utah for several years. They came to Star Valley in October 1887, when only a few people lived here. They made their home in Afton and lived on the lot now owned by Lionel Frome.
Mrs Hurd was an active worker in church affairs and worked for many years in the Relief Society, choir and MIA. She was the first president of the Afton YWMIA it is reported.
Her husband Mark Hurd, was the choir leader in Afton for many years and she was an active choir member for more than thirty years.
During the early years after the valley was settled there was no doctor here, so Mrs Hurd opened her house to people who were ill and she acted as nurse. Scores of people were born at her home, where a midwife made deliveries and Mrs Hurd acted as nurse.
