A lifelong Baytown, Texas resident and member of one of the pioneer families that settled along Cedar Bayou. Sam Young Sjolander, 85, of 2713 Archer Road died Friday May 21, 1976 in a Baytown hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Paul U. Lee Chapel with the Revs. E.R. Burns and Garland Biggs officiating.
Born in 1891, Sjolander was the youngest of five sons in the family for which Sjolander Road was named.
Sjolander bought land adjoing the family's original homestead and married Caroline McGar. He was a rice famer and cattleman.
Active in Cedar Bayou Lodge No. 321 AF&AM, 58 years, he was a past master of the organization. Sjolander was elected to the old Cedar Bayou School board twice, serving as president one term. He was a trustee when the last Cedar Bayou high school was built in the 1930's.
Sjolander was also a member of the Cedar Bayou Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by three sons; George A. Sjolander, John (Bill) Sjolander and Earl O. Sjolander, all of Baytown, Texas, three daughters; Mrs. Winnie Rees of Altoona, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Darlington of Baytown and Mrs. Lil Williamson of Arlington, Texas, one sister; Mrs Annie Scott of Baytown. Fourteen grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
Burial will be in the Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery. Cedar Bayou Lodge No. 321 will be in charge of graveside services and Masons will be pallbearers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Ssgt Sam Curtis Sjolander who was killed in action during WWII.
Cause of death: Myocardial degeneration with failure - per death certificate.
