Silas was 5th of 7 children born to Israel Wilcox IV and Anna A. Dowd Wilcox in Berlin, Hartford, Connecticut. Some of the other children died as young children. He had a younger brother Alfred who married Miranda Kelsey and had a family, and his youngest sibling, Phebe, lived to see the age of 21. He did have an older half brother, Amos Brunson Wilcox, with whom Silas lived with in Vermont after his parents died. Later he moved to St. Lawrence County, New York and met Margaret Belinda Allen. They were married 17 January 1818 in Madrid, St. Lawrence, New York. They moved back and forth across the St. Lawrence River as their children were born: Samuel Allen Wilcox (1819) and Silas Almeran Wilcox (between 1823-1825) in New York, David Alfred Wilcox (about 1830) and Phebe Ann Wilcox (1836) in Ontario. The Wilcoxes were visited by missionaries and joined the Mormon Church in 1839. Silas and Margaret's family and the family of oldest son Samuel Allen and his wife and her parents, siblings and two cousins traveled to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States. Their 5th child, William Christopher Wilcox (1841) was born there.

Silas and sons Silas Almeran and David Alfred were sent to Wisconsin to obtain wood for the Nauvoo Temple. When the saints were driven by the mobs out of Nauvoo, Silas came back to the saints in Iowa, but his two sons remained in Wisconsin.

Margaret died in Winter Quarters in 1847 and Silas married the young foster sister-in-law of his daughter Phebe Ann Wilcox Woodland, Eunice Abigail Woodland (Mosier was her biological surname) Wilcox age 16 on 8 June 1951 in Fremont County, Iowa. They had several children, but all of them died as children but their oldest daughter that I know of, Malinda Wilcox (1854-1885), Adella or Idella M. Wilcox (1860-1932) and their youngest daughter Orlena Ella or Elizabeth Wilcox (1862-1945). Census records show that Silas and his young wife lived in the Mormon settlement in Preparation, Iowa, which also had many splinter groups after the death of Joseph Smith.

Silas died in that area, around the Loess Hills. When I visited the area in fall of 2007, locals said that since Silas was a Mormon, he was undoubtably buried in the "Mormon Cemetery" or Preparation Cemetery, even though I could not locate a stone with his name on it. The IAGENWEB link for Preparation Cemetery has picture links for some of the stones that are in the cemetery. The Preparation Cemetery is actually located across the border in Monona County.
