Oliver was born the son of Antoine Bernard dit Lafontaine and Marguerite Robidou, at Otter Creek, LaSalle Twp., Monroe Co. Michigan. It is not known how much education he received as a child but the census records show that he did work as a farm laborer and carpenter. In Oliver's military records we find this description of him at age 22, he was 6 ft. 1 1/2 in. tall with dark complexion, and had black hair and black eyes. He enlisted in the Union Army on Aug. 19, 1861 at Toledo, Ohio and held the rank of private in Company B. 14th. Regiment Ohio Infantry. In that first summer of his three year term Oliver contracted Phthisis ( a wasting disease of the lungs, consumption ) this condition caused him to be hospitalized in the winter months that year. He returned to active duty in March of 1862, and was considered unfit for duty in June of that year. On Aug. 4, 1862, the army gave him a disability discharge in Nashville, Tenn. It appears that for some reason he did not return home, perhaps he was just too ill to travel we can only surmise as to why, but on Nov. 10, 1862 he was admitted to the No.12 Hospital in Nashville, and three days later on Nov. 13, he died of " chronic diarrhea". Oliver was buried the next day Nov. 14, 1862 in the 1254 City Cemetery, section B, grave site 6638, in Nashville, Tenn.
