Grandma Blackwell Passes
Away at Home of Her Son
Age 85 Years, 1 Month
and 29 Days.
Died at the home of her son J. L. Blackwell east of Long Creek Tuesday afternoon September 8, 1914 at 1 o'clock, Mrs. Jane Morris Blackwell, at the ripe age of 85 years, 1 month and 29 days.
Jane Morris was born in Humpries County Tennessee July 9, 1829. On September 6, 1846, at Beardstown, Tennessee, she was married to Clement C. Blackwell who proceeded her to the Great Beyond in 1906. To this union 15 children were born, 12 of whom survivie to mourn the loss of an exceptionally fine mother. Jesse A. Blackwell of Claremore, Oklahoma; J. W. of Baker; Samuel B. of Glenns Ferry, Idaho; Richard S. of Hamilton; Henry Y. of Portland; Clement W. of McCall Idaho; Mary Dustin of Warrens, Idaho; Nancy E. Branson, Perneecee P. Carter, Jane Criswell, Joseph R., and John L. Blackwell all of Long Creek. Besides her 12 children, Mrs. Blackwell is survived by 65 grand-children, 93 great-grand-children, and 2 great-great-grand-children, a total of 172 descendants. Mrs. Blackwell was numbered among the early pioneers of Oregon, having moved to Franklin County Arkansas in 1850, and to Grant County Oregon in 1875, and in 1877 settled on the homestead where (she) died.
"Aunt Jennie" as she was universally called, always kept open house, and dispensed hospitality with a lavish hand until the infirmities of old age incapaciated her from further activities. None were turned away from her hospitable home when in need of food or shelter.
Impressive funeral services were held at the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Flood of Hamilton, after which all that was mortal of this grand old mother in Israel was tenderly conveyed to our silent city where she now rests in peace.
"The bell told (tolled) her age as the hers (hearse) slowly traveled from their home to the church (sic) to rest in Long Creek Cemetery."
