OBITUARY
Perniecie Paralee Blackwell was born in Texas when it was still a territory, March 11, 1856, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Nell, at Pendleton, Oregon, February 9, 1949, at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 29 days. In 1872, at the age of 16 years, she was united in marriage to William Carter of Arkansas. When their second child was 10 days of age they came to Oregon by wagon train in the fall of 1875 and settled near John Day for two years. They then moved to Long Creek where they operated a stock ranch. Mr. Carter preceded her in death in 1913. She continued to operate the ranch until the age of 82 years. To their union were born ten children, who are all living except one daughter, Carrie, who passed away in 1918.

She leaves to mourn her loss four sons and five daughters: Samuel B., Charlie C., and John L. all of Long Creek; William Jr., of Baker, Mary M. Davis of Ritter, Cora M. Johnson of Portland, Della Sorenson of North Powder, Nellie Foss of Pendleton and Esther Gibbs of Long Creek; 29 grandchildren, 47 great grand-children, 2 great great grand-children, 1 brother, Clem Blackwell of Wallace, Idaho, 1 sister, Martha Jane Criswell, of Long Creek, Oregon and many, many friends.

To pay tribute to her memory we state that she lived by her oft spoken principles of love, faith and charity. No task was ever too great for her in helping a friend or neighbor. She was always charitable to the unfortunate. She was truly a devoted and loving Pioneer Mother. Her long and useful life is a shrine to posterity as an outstanding contribution to the settling of the west that demanded sturdy self-reliant individuals who faced hardships, toil, sacrifice and danger with a never failing firm faith in God.
