He worked on the Burton Ranch in the summers as a boy and also farmed in Etna.
At the age of 18 he joined the Wyoming National guard and in 1917 was called to active duty, serving as a railroad tunnel guard at Kemmerer, Wyo. His company was federalized at the outbreak of World War I and he served as an infantry corporal in France. He was honorably discharged in 1919. He was active in the American Legion and was presented a 50-year pin in recognition of his service.
He served as a missionary in the Central states LDS Mission for 27 months after his discharge.
He married Ellen Kathleen Powell, a school teacher who had come to Etna, June 23, 1926 in the St. George (Utah) Temple. They made their home and raised their family in Afton.
In 1925 he built and operated the first gasoline service station in Afton-Dixon's Service. For 25 years he worked as an electrician for the Afton Electric Co. He also raised foxes in Afton.
He was active in political and civic affairs. He served as Lincoln County Republican Chairman, and also as Republican State Committeeman. He was an Afton town councilman for six years. Dixon always enjoyed music. As a boy he played the baritone horn in the band, sang in choirs and took great delight in hearing his children perform. He had a great love for hymns, and military and patriotic music.
It was a source of satisfaction to Mr. Burton that three of his five children served in the mission field, and all graduated from college and all were married in LDS temples. He had a strong testimony of the gospel.
