Bernice Burton Holmes, 80, formerly of Afton died Saturday. May 28, 1988, at woodland Memorial Hospital, Woodland, CA. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 31, 1988 in Woodland.
She was born in an old Star Valley pioneer family of 11 children, June 20, 1907 in Afton.
She taught for many years in public schools. She graduated from LDS High School in Salt Lake City, and the University of Wyoming and she did graduate work at Harvard University, University of Utah, Wisconsin State University at Eau Claire; University of Southern California, Humboldt State University, and Northern Illinois University at De Kalb.
Member of the LDS church she taught Sunday School, Primary, and Young women's Mutual. She was a former member of the Los Angeles Stake Genealogical Committee, and a Relief Society class leader for many years.
Her father, Arthur F. Burton, was in Star Valley Stake Presidency for 27 years.
She retired from teaching in Eureka City Schools in 1972, after which she served on a full0time mission in Oklahoma with her husband, Dr. LaMar L. Holmes, who retired at the same time from Humboldt State University. They traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East.
Her work in genealogical research was carried on for many years. After serving on a mission she worked with her husband in the Oakland Temple for three years. She was a devoted student of both ancient and modern scriptures.
Her poems have appeared in print and in 1962 she won second place in the E.R. Snow Poetry contest among over 500 entries. Her family is presently organizing over 1,000 of her poems for publication.
Mrs Holmes is survived by her husband LaMar Lindsay Holmes, Woodland; sons Bart, Santa Rosa, Dan Elk Grove, and Roger, Visalia; daughter, Trilby Priest, all born in California. She is also survived by four brothers and sisters; Eva Franz, Lakewood, CO; Reese Burton, Loomis, CA; Ruth Bishop, Los Angeles; and Gail Burton, Provo; 27 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
