Joel's birth details are unverified but he is thought to have been born in Henry County, Alabama in 1841. Census records alternatively list his birth state as Alabama or Georgia.
He lived in East Texas for much of his life, where voting rolls first establish his presence in Tyler County in 1859. He lived in the Woodville area and later in Jasper County, Texas before moving his family to the Bethel community, near Logansport, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, in late 1892. He remained in Bethel for the remainder of his life.
In 1861, he joined the Confederate States Army in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas, and served through the end of the war. He was a cattle herder and probably an infantryman. His unit saw action on several fronts throughout the war. He was captured by Union forces at the Battle of Arkansas Post and was shipped up the Mississippi River to a Union POW camp. He was ultimately paroled (released) in Richmond, Virginia and rejoined the remnants of his unit, which subsequently saw action at the Battle of Lookout Mountain.
Joel R. Register died in Charity Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana, where he had been sent for medical treatment.
Neither his paternal nor maternal lineage have been established. He is believed to be related to Mary Porter Register of North Carolina, who appears in the household with him in 1860 and 1870 census records. Mary probably died in East Texas, circa 1890.
