Jennie Faye Cookson, 66, of La Grande, died Jan. 6 at a local care center. At her request there will be no public service. A private family burial will be at the Island City Cemetery. Mrs. Cookson was born Aug. 2, 1935, to Arthur Truman and Ada Elizabeth Sinclair Whiteman in La Grande. She attended school in La Grande and married Earl Cookson here. She was a member of the Catholic church. In her younger days she enjoyed swimming, picnicking, having barbecues, fishing, mushroom hunting, going to the mountains and spending time with her family and her dogs. Survivors include her husband of La Grande; children, Richard Speer of Burley, Idaho, Kathy Johnson of Portland and Jackie Hallgarth of Washington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Dorla Culver and Betty Kimball, both of Dexter, James Whiteman of Union, Eddie Whiteman of Ontario, and David Whiteman and Linda Rysdam, both of La Grande; and other relatives. A son, Carl Speer Jr., and sisters, Nancy Rachau and Donna Whiteman, died earlier. Contributions may be made to a memorial fund in her name in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.
