OBITUARIES
CARL LEON SPEER
Former La Grande resident Carl Leon Speer, 56, of Pilot Rock died Saturday, May 25, 1996, at his mountain hideaway of natural causes. A memorial service for Mr. Speer will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Summerville Baptist Church with Pastor Chuck Beickel officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Mr. Speer was born Oct. 23, 1939, to Elmer and Marie B. (Reiber) in Ontario; He graduated from La Grande High School. He married Twila Marie Porter on June 14, 1980, in Moscow, Idaho. He served with the National Guard for five years and has been working as a foreman at the mill in Pilot Rock for over 30 years. Mr. Speer was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and his mountain cabin. He was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Twila Marie Speer, Pilot Rock; children, Richard Speer and Carla Mae Speer of Boise, Idaho, step-son John Rasmussen of Olympia, Wash., step-daughter Lisa "Jo" Chamberlin of Portland; grandchildren, Taylor, Gabriel, Terrin, Kaylinn, Kristina, Crystal and Eric; father, Elmer Speer, La Grande; mother and stepfather, Marie and Robert Proffitt, La Grande; sisters, Lois Kowalski of Alaska and Wilma Smith of Clarendon, Ark.; stepbrother, Robert Allen Proffitt, Sacramento, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many friends. Sons Carl Speer Jr. , Eric Speer and a brother, Ellis Speer, died earlier.
