Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 at the Northland Funeral Chapel for Leonard Sawyer, 59, of Backus who died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, apparently from a heart attack. The Rev. Harvey Swenson officiated.

Mr. Sawyer had been a resident in this area most of his life. He was born June 21, 1909, in Iowa, and was well known and highly regarded by his large number of friends throughout the county.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie; a granddaughter, Carol Ann; two brothers, Pierce William Sawyer of Walker and Vernon Spencer Sawyer of Seattle, Wash.; four sisters, Daisy Virginia Sawyer of Brainerd, Evelyn of Minneapolis, Lillian of Milwaukee, Wis., and Ethel Orena Sawyer Tilbury of Washington.

Pallbearers were Cliff Sycks, Roy Petersen, Hermit Zaffke, Raymond Barchus, Floyd Smith and Richard Rieder. Organist Mrs. Michael Brezinsky accompanied Mrs. Cecil Carlson, soloist. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Backus. Northland Funeral Home of Pine River had charge of the arrangements.
