During a revival, he was converted and called to preach. Soon after that, he married one of his students, Hannah Roswell Rhea, on May 19, 1842. To this union were born 11 children: James Milton, John Rhea, Albert Spartan, Rufus Alexander, William Walker, Benjamin King, Moses Porter, Baby daughter, Roenea Jane, Cornelia Ann, and Martha Viana Hannah.
Around 1850, the family moved from Tennessee to Arkansas, then on to Texas in 1857, where they stopped in Leander for a while before moving on to the Gabriel going towards Georgetown. It was here that sons, John and Milt, went to the Civil War.
In 1857, the year Rev. Lewis Gordon Tucker came to Williamson Co., Texas, he organized the first Cumberland Presbyterian Church in that part of Texas, known as Elm Grove Church. In 1865, he and his sons organized the Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Florence, Texas.
After the war, the Tuckers bought a place south of Knoll. It was here that Lewis Gordon was building a new home when he passed away. The house was only partially finished, and it was thought that this hard work hastened his death on July 14, 1880. He was buried at the Matsler Cemetery in Williamson Co., Texas.
