The headstone date of his birth is incorrect, he was born August 22, 1854 in Grove Hill, Clarke Co., Alabama. Smith died January 11, 1934 in Fort Smith Sebastian Co., Arkansas.
He was the son of Thomas B. and Mary McCorquodale Franklin. After the deaths of his parents, he was raised by his half brother and sister-in-law Benjamin amd Mary Taylor Franklin.
After the death of his half brother Benjamin in the Civil War. He was taken by his sister-in-law Mary Taylor Franklin to Franklin Co., Arkansas at the age of 14.
Mary remarried to her cousin John Volentine and N. Smith Franklin lived with them until he married.
Mary Taylor Franklin Volentine was the only mother he ever knew.
Neal Smith Franklin married John Anna Gage on September 4th, 1879 in Etna, Franklin Co., Arkansas, John Anna was the daughter of Calvin and Amanda Anna Adaline Reed Gage. Neal Smith and John Anna were the parents of eleven children, including my Grandfather, Alonzo Turner "Lon" Franklin.
Neal lived with my Grandparents in Wetumpka, Hughes Co., Oklahoma. My granddad, Lon Franklin worked in the oil fields and my grandmother, Frankie managed a hotel there.
My father, Mack Franklin, adored his grandfather.
When he was an old man, my father still sang the praises of Nathan Nathaniel Neal Smith Franklin, as he called him. My father said it was Neal who gave him his first taste of Wildcat whiskey from a fruit jar lid at the very tender age of five. My father also said that when my Grandma Frankie found out, she chased Neal out of the hotel with a broom.
