He was a carpenter as were many of the men in his family.
He married Josephine Loper in Newark in 1905. His brother Samuel, also a carpenter, married a woman in Jersey City about that time, i.e. it seems like the Croot brothers were then working in the "big city." James and Josephine were in Newark in 1910, but later moved around central NJ a good bit. They were in Tewksbury, Hunterdon in 1915; Califor, Hunterdon County in 1917; Bedminster, Somerset County in 1920; Tewksbury, Hunterdon County in 1930; Washington, Morris Co in 1940; and in Long Valley, Morris Co in 1942 per their son's draft registration.
They had three children:
* Emily Odgers Croot 1908-1970
* Russell James Croot 1913-1953
* Marjorie Croot Hoyt 1922-2021
