Ida Josephine Loper was the daughter of Alfred T. Loper 1861-1912 and Martha Philhower 1852-1900. They married in 1883. Her mother was previously to married Henry Burd in 1871 and had one daughter, Elizabeth/Lizzie Burd.

Josephine is found in the 1900 Census with her parents in Newark and in the 1905 NJ State Census boarding with the Henry "Philhour" family, likely Philhower relatives, in Newark. She was employed as a clerk.

She married James C. Croot in 1905, likely in Newark. Interestingly, his brother Samuel also married a woman in Jersey City about that time, i.e. it seems like the Croot brothers were then working in the "big city." James was a carpenter. James and Josephine were in Newark in 1910, but later moved around central NJ a good bit. They were in Tewksbury, Hunterdon in 1915; Califor, Hunterdon County in 1917; Bedminster, Somerset County in 1920; Tewksbury, Hunterdon County in 1930; and Washington, Morris Co in 1940. After her husband's death, she ran a boarding house in Ocean Grove for a time in the 1950s. She died in Madison, Morris County.

She and her husband had three children:

* Emily Odgers Croot 1908-1970
* Russell James Croot 1913-1953
* Marjorie Croot Hoyt 1922-2021
