Richard was born in Manila, PI to Captain Robert D and Alma R Austin. They were repatriated to the US, Washington, DC in 1941 a few months before Pearl Harbor due to the Japanese threat. Richard had Celiac from birth and had major health issues. He was very sick most of his 3 years and finally succumbed to his illness on Jan, 14th, 1944 at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC. It was a very trying time for his grieving mother. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery. His mother and father were later interred in the same plot at Arlington upon their death.
