On May 2, 1894, he married Marie Hirdler, in Cherry Grove Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. They had six children: Martha, Lawrence, Walter, Richard, Archie, and Ruth. In 1906, they moved to a homestead in Spink County, South Dakota.
Richard died during the flu epidemic of 1918.
