At the age of five, Richard watch his father shot to death in their living room with his younger brother, sister, and pregnant mother.
On May 2, 1894, he married Marie Hirdler, in Cherry Grove Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. They had six children: Martha, Lawrence, Walter, Richard, Archie, and Ruth. In 1906, they moved to a homestead in Spink County, South Dakota.
Richard died during the flu epidemic of 1918.
